The County Engineer and County Roads Department is responsible for construction and maintenance of the County Road System in Marion County. Marion County’s road system has 885 miles of roadway. This includes 132 miles of paved roads; 670 miles of gravel, 29 miles of seal coated roads and 50 miles of dirt roads. The system also includes 212 bridges and 88 large culverts


Marion County Road Notification System

The Marion County Road Department, working in conjunction with the Iowa County Engineers Association Service Bureau (ICEASB), is now participating in the Road Notification System web site to provide information on Marion County Road Closures. This system is very similar to the Iowa 511 web site.

Engineering Duties include:

Design, construction, inspection and contract administration of Marion County Road system road and bridge projects,

Department operating budget and construction program development,

Department personnel administration,

Accounting functions,

Response to petitions, requests, or concerns regarding secondary roadway condition and drainage, temporary road closures, and obstructions in the right of way,

Conduct Engineering studies including speed studies, road vacations, traffic studies and sign warrants,

Subdivision roadway review and approval,

Entrance permit review and approval. Property owners are responsible for installing new entrances connecting to a county road. A permit for the entrance is required from the County Road Department prior to installation. If hard surfacing of a property access is desired a permit is also required. Installation of an unpermitted access is subject to removal,

Permitting of utility or other work within the county road right of way,

Oversize/overweight vehicle permit issuance for county roads,

Section corner information, aerial photo information and bench mark information is available for public viewing,

Right of way information on Marion County roads and construction projects.

Maintenance Duties include:

Surface repairs and maintenance – this includes rocking the County’s gravel roads, paving the paved roads, pothole repairs, rocking shoulders,

Bridge and culvert repairs,

Road ditch cleaning in order to improve drainage,

Snow removal on county roads and custom snow and ice control for small towns within Marion County,

Roadway sign installation and maintenance (911 signs are installed and maintained by the 911 office),

Roadside vegetation management.
