  • Hours: Mainly Monday - Friday; 8 am - 4:30 pm

Job Summary

Prosecute criminal and other type cases for the State and County, and render legal opinions for County officers and agencies.

Job Duties

  • Prosecute simple misdemeanors.  Review all new charges and ensure witnesses are subpoenaed for trial.  Attempt to negotiate pleas with defendants and/or attorneys, and speak with victims.  Prosecute cases in court.
  • Prosecute indictable misdemeanors and certain felonies.  Review police reports and speak with witnesses to obtain facts relevant to charges and possible victim restitution.  Negotiate with defense attorneys.  Prepare for and conduct trials.
  • Mental health and drug commitments.  Review applications and reports of medical personnel prior to scheduled hearings.  Litigate at hearings.
  • Juvenile law.  Prosecute child protective and delinquency cases, and keep cases moving through the system.  Ensure that DHS has legal advice and that the court is properly informed to protect children
     

Job Qualifications

  • Law degree from an accredited university
  • Prior experience in criminal/juvenile law is desirable
  • Bar admission in the State of Iowa.
