Job Summary
Oversee and manage shop operations and is responsible for maintenance and repair of the department’s fleet of vehicles and equipment, responsibilities include supervision of any employee directly associated with the above-mentioned work.

Job Duties
Management Responsibilities:
o Oversees shop and shop areas; including the shop floor, parts room, any storage areas of shop parts/tools/equipment, all shop equipment and tools. Includes responsibility of overall cleanliness and order of the shop and storage areas.
o Ensures all applicable safety standards and regulations are followed in shop areas.
o Manages inventory, parts orders, shop supplies, and equipment.
o Plans and coordinates the maintenance and repair of the departments fleet of gas and diesel-powered vehicles, trucks, and equipment.
o Prepares maintenance schedules for all motorized and non-motorized vehicles, trucks, light-duty and heavy-duty equipment; notifies drivers and operators when maintenance is to be performed and assures compliance.
o Maintains database of maintenance and repair records for all departmental vehicles and equipment.
o Performs, manages, and oversees repairs and maintenance of department vehicles and equipment. Includes the ordering of necessary parts, tools, equipment to accomplish the above in a timely, fiscally responsible, efficient, and effective manner.
o Operates diagnostic equipment to determine appropriate repairs.
o Assists in the ordering and purchasing of equipment.
o Assists or performs cost/benefit analysis, life-cycle cost analysis, repair vs replacement considerations, return on investment, or other similar shop operational evaluations.
o Evaluates and ensures all departmental equipment is properly and well maintained and safe to use.
o Operates lowboy and service truck to retrieve or repair equipment.
o Operates heavy equipment to move, load, haul or diagnose for repair.
o Constantly evaluates shop related activities and procedures for effectiveness, efficiency, and fiscal responsibility.
o Manages shop and equipment related budget and invoicing in a timely manner.
o Operates equipment when designated, consistent with equipment operator essential functions and responsibilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
o Assists in hiring shop employees
o Trains shop employees on shop and departmental safety, functions, operations, and general good practice.
o Trains equipment operators in the proper care and maintenance of applicable equipment, including daily/routine activities and documentation of such.
o Trains all departmental staff on safety within the shop and proper use of applicable equipment within the shop area.
o Oversees the daily workflow and schedules of shop employees, equipment, etc.
o Seeks out continuing education and training opportunities.
o Conducts timely and constructive performance evaluations of subordinates.
o Handles discipline of subordinates in accordance with County policy.
Job Qualifications
High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
Vocational or technical school training or certification preferred.
Extensive knowledge and expertise, sufficient to teach others or evaluate their work, such as might be acquired in three/five years of prior related experience. Specific repair experience required includes gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, electrical systems, and engine exhaust and after-treatment systems.
Driver’s License Required
Class A CDL with air brake endorsement preferred or ability to obtain w/in 6 months of commencing employment.
Tanker endorsement preferred
