Buying or Selling a Vehicle?

A Note From Your Treasurer:  Bill of Sale

Do you plan on buying or selling a vehicle in Iowa soon?  Ever?  Odds are good that the answer is yes for most of us.  Please be aware that the Iowa Department of Revenue will require a Bill of Sale with EVERY title transfer effective January 1, 2022.  However, it is important to note that most counties already require a bill of sale.  This means that the county treasurer will refuse a title transfer if you do not have a Bill of Sale.  It is common for folks to buy and sell vehicles from strangers on the internet – Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc.  I cannot stress enough the importance of not only obtaining a Bill of Sale in these transactions, but also make certain that you retain contact information for your buyer/seller.  You may need to contact them later for missing information or inaccurate paperwork.

Don’t forget!  Title transfers are done by appointment.  You may self-schedule your appointment on this website at your convenience.

As always, please call us if you have any questions at 641-828-2202.
