Military Records

Why should you record your DD-214 / NGB-22 paperwork?

Certificates of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD-214) or National Guard Report of Separation and Record of Service (NGB-22) are issued to military members when leaving the military.

Recording your DD-214 / NGB-22 paperwork can save you a lot of headaches in the future. Often, you will need certified copies of your discharge paperwork to confirm military service; if you are applying for jobs, schools, VA health care, VA claims, burial benefits, and other veteran’s benefits. You have only one set of discharge papers; recording them not only safeguards them but allows you to get certified copies. These certified copies act exactly like your original paperwork and allow you to give out multiple copies to many different sources.

The service person is always welcome at the Marion County Recorder’s Office to request a previously recorded copy of their record, with a valid Photo I.D. There is no fee for these services.

If a spouse or family member needs a copy, there is an application and entitlement verification process. Please contact the Marion County Veteran’s Affairs Office for assistance with needed services.

In 2004, Public Act 093-0468 was established to protect the rights of veterans, meaning a recorded military discharge is no longer considered public information and is not available for public viewing.
